The Speed of Combat

Since the end of my last game I've been thinking a lot about the pace of combat, sessions and campaigns. Wile I strongly prefer sandbox style games where outcomes are dictated solely by player choice I'm slowly warming the the idea that taking some responsibility for tempo is important to better myself as a DM.

Combat Deep Dive Results

The results are 62.5% in, and I'd like to share them together with my conclusions. I'll revise the numbers in this post when the response increments to 100%. Something I did differently this time is take the survey and (I think) configure it so you can all see the results. I am the outlier in certain areas, so I will call myself out by name but everyone else's responses will of course remain private.

When I began playing D&D in the 80s the only method of play available to my group was "theater of the mind." Sure we had a friend with an older brother who painted miniatures but for various reasons using them was a rare experience. So it was that someone was assigned the duty of mapping while I did my solid best to describe rooms accurately.

Lethality: Why R.P.G.s Need Stakes

I'm not much of a Poker player but I've played enough to observe that five-card draw is a terrible game. Now I know that statement will be enough to get a fair few people angry with me but you can test this theory on your own. Go play some five-card draw only remove betting. Then observe how much you enjoy that game.

THAC0 has been discussed elsewhere but I want to give it a look here for two reasons. First I find it interesting enough to be worth understanding. Second it would seem that the acronym has become the butt of a joke being told by people who are old enough to know better. Let’s begin with the Eric J. Holmes boxed set because that’s where I began.
